Sources of UMF Problems
Issues Opening UMF Files
MediaHolder Disappeared
When trying to open your UMF file, you get the error "Can't Open UMF File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because MediaHolder isn't installed on your PC. You won't be able to double-click to open your UMF because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you don't have MediaHolder installed, and you know of another program to open your UMF file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Outdated MediaHolder
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a MediaHolder Universal Media Format File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of MediaHolder installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Your MediaHolder Universal Media Format File file was probably created by a newer release of MediaHolder than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Right-clicking on your UMF, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: Not having the right MediaHolder version on your computer can cause problems opening UMF files.
Other Causes of UMF File Opening Problems
You can still experience errors opening UMF files even with the latest version of MediaHolder installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening UMFs. Issues that aren't software-related:
- Invalid UMF file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Unintentional removal of the description of the UMF file inside the Windows Registry
- MediaHolder or another UMF application experienced a flawed installation
- Something has caused file corruption of your UMF
- Your UMF is infected with malware
- Hardware associated with UMF has outdated drivers
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your MediaHolder Universal Media Format File file successfully
