Sources of MER Problems
Common MER Opening Problems
Missing Rockwell Automation RSView Studio or RSView ME
When trying to open your MER file, you get the error "Can't Open MER File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Rockwell Automation RSView Studio or RSView ME missing in %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your MER file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you don't have Rockwell Automation RSView Studio or RSView ME installed, and you know of another program to open your MER file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Outdated Rockwell Automation RSView Studio or RSView ME
Sometimes your installed version of Rockwell Automation RSView Studio or RSView ME won't support your RSView Development Runtime File file. If you've got the wrong version of Rockwell Automation RSView Studio or RSView ME installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Your RSView Development Runtime File file was probably created by a newer release of Rockwell Automation RSView Studio or RSView ME than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Right-clicking on your MER, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening MER files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
More Causes of Problems Opening MERs
Assuming you have the right Rockwell Automation RSView Studio or RSView ME version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening MER files. Other MER opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for MER
- Unintentional removal of the description of the MER file inside the Windows Registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the MER format
- File corruption affecting your MER file
- The MER is infected with a virus
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your MER file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your RSView Development Runtime File file successfully
