Troubleshooting Problems Opening BT Files
Common BT Opening Problems
Missing Global Mapper
When you double-click your BT file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have Global Mapper installed for %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the BT file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your BT, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Obsolete Version of Global Mapper
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Global Mapper installed that's incompatible with your BT (Binary Terrain) File type. If you've got the wrong version of Global Mapper installed, you'll need to install the correct version. The primary cause of this problem is that your BT (Binary Terrain) File file was created by a different (newer) version of Global Mapper than what's installed.
Tip: Right-clicking on your BT, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Conclusion: The majority of BT file opening issues are due to not having the correct Global Mapper version installed.
Additional BT Opening Issues
Although you might already have Global Mapper or another BT-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening BT (Binary Terrain) File files. If you're still experiencing problems opening BT files, there could be other computer problems. Other contributing causes:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for BT
- Accidental deletion of the description of the BT file in the Windows registry
- Partial installation of Global Mapper that did not fully complete
- Your BT can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- The BT is infected with a virus
- Hardware associated with BT has outdated drivers
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the BT (Binary Terrain) File file
