Sources of RLA Problems
Typical RLA Opening Challenges
XnView MP Not Present
When trying to open your RLA file, you get the error "Can't Open RLA File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to XnView MP missing in %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your RLA because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: When another RLA application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Obsolete Version of XnView MP
Your Alias/Wavefront Image File file is incompatible with XnView MP because you might have the wrong version installed. If you do not have the proper version XnView MP (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is predominately due to having a Alias/Wavefront Image File file version that was created by a newer version of XnView MP than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of RLA file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Regardless, most of the RLA file opening problems relate to not having the right version of XnView MP installed.
Other RLA File Opening Causes
Assuming you have the right XnView MP version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening RLA files. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening RLA files. Additional factors include:
- File references in the Windows Registry for RLA are wrong
- Unintentional removal of the description of the RLA file inside the Windows Registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the RLA format
- Your RLA file is corrupted (issues with your Alias/Wavefront Image File file itself)
- Your RLA has adversely impacted by malware
- Hardware related to RLAs has device driver corruption
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Alias/Wavefront Image File file
