Understanding ST9 Issues
Common ST9 Opening Problems
XnView MP Removed
Double-clicking your ST9 file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open ST9 File". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because XnView MP isn't installed on your PC. You won't be able to double-click to open your ST9 because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you don't have XnView MP installed, and you know of another program to open your ST9 file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Incorrect XnView MP Version
In other instances, your SBIG CCD Camera Image file version may not be supported by your version of XnView MP. Download the latest XnView MP version from the XnSoft website to ensure you have the correct one installed. The primary cause of this problem is that your SBIG CCD Camera Image file was created by a different (newer) version of XnView MP than what's installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the ST9 file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Conclusion: The majority of ST9 file opening issues are due to not having the correct XnView MP version installed.
Other ST9 File Issues
You can still experience errors opening ST9 files even with the latest version of XnView MP installed on your PC. Other ST9 opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These issues include:
- Invalid ST9 file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- The ST9 file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Invalid installation of a ST9-associated program (eg. XnView MP)
- The ST9 itself is corrupted
- Your ST9 is infected with malware
- Hardware related to ST9s has device driver corruption
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your SBIG CCD Camera Image file
