Understanding BPN Issues
Common BPN Opening Problems
Missing ARCHICAD
When you double-click your BPN file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have ARCHICAD for %%os%% installed on your computer. The typical path of opening your BPN with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens BPN files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
ARCHICAD Requires Update
Your ArchiCAD Project Backup File file is incompatible with ARCHICAD because you might have the wrong version installed. Installing the latest version of ARCHICAD from Graphisoft is recommended. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of BPN file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening BPN files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other Causes of BPN File Opening Problems
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of ARCHICAD will resolve your issue. If you are still having problems opening BPN files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Invalid BPN file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry BPN description
- Defective install of a BPN program, such as ARCHICAD
- BPN file corruption
- Malware-tainted BPN file can't be opened
- Hardware related to BPNs has device driver corruption
- Windows cannot load your ArchiCAD Project Backup File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
