Troubleshoot PYC Files
Frequent PYC Opening Issues
Python Removed
You attempt to load your PYC file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The PYC File Extension". If so, it typically means that you don't have Python installed for %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the PYC file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When another PYC application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Obsolete Version of Python
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Python installed that's incompatible with your Python Compiled File type. Visit the Python Software Foundation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Python. Your Python Compiled File file was probably created by a newer release of Python than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Investigate your PYC file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Regardless, most of the PYC file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Python installed.
Other PYC File Opening Causes
You can still experience errors opening PYC files even with the latest version of Python installed on your PC. If you're still experiencing problems opening PYC files, there could be other computer problems. Issues that aren't software-related:
- PYC file type Registry entries are wrong
- Corruption of the PYC file description inside the Registry
- Corrupt install of Python or other PYC-related program
- File corruption affecting your PYC file
- Malware-tainted PYC file can't be opened
- Device drivers for PYC-related hardware are out-of-date
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Python Compiled File files
