Troubleshoot HAK Files
Issues Opening HAK Files
Missing BioWare Neverwinter Nights
When trying to open your HAK file, you get the error "Can't Open HAK File Type". Customarily, this means that BioWare Neverwinter Nights is not installed on %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your HAK because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your HAK file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Wrong Version of BioWare Neverwinter Nights is Installed
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of BioWare Neverwinter Nights installed that's incompatible with your BioWare Aurora Engine Data File type. If you've got the wrong version of BioWare Neverwinter Nights installed, you'll need to install the correct version. The primary cause of this problem is that your BioWare Aurora Engine Data File file was created by a different (newer) version of BioWare Neverwinter Nights than what's installed.
Tip: Right-clicking on your HAK, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: Not having the right BioWare Neverwinter Nights version on your computer can cause problems opening HAK files.
Other HAK File Issues
Even with the correct version of BioWare Neverwinter Nights installed, you can still experience difficulties opening HAKs. If you are continuing to have errors with loading HAK files, other external issues might be to blame. These issues include:
- File references in the Windows Registry for HAK are wrong
- The HAK file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Defective install of a HAK program, such as BioWare Neverwinter Nights
- HAK file corruption
- HAK file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Hardware related to HAKs has device driver corruption
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the BioWare Aurora Engine Data File file
