Understanding 47 Issues
Frequent 47 Opening Issues
Missing FreeBSD
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open 47 Files" when trying to open your 47. Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because FreeBSD isn't installed on your PC. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the 47 file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you don't have FreeBSD installed, and you know of another program to open your 47 file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
FreeBSD is Out-of-Date
Your FreeBSD/NetBSD Data file is incompatible with FreeBSD because you might have the wrong version installed. Download the latest FreeBSD version from the The FreeBSD Community website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Your FreeBSD/NetBSD Data file was probably created by a newer release of FreeBSD than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of 47 file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening 47 files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Additional 47 Opening Issues
Errors opening FreeBSD/NetBSD Data files can still occur even with the latest FreeBSD software installed on your computer. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening 47s. Issues that aren't software-related:
- Invalid 47 file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Deletion of the 47 file description from the Registry by mistake
- FreeBSD or another 47 application experienced a flawed installation
- File corruption affecting your 47 file
- 47 file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Drivers associated with 47 software need to be updated
- Windows cannot load your FreeBSD/NetBSD Data file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
