Common Problems Opening REN Files

Unknown Software Disappeared

When trying to open your REN file, you get the error "Can't Open REN File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have Unknown Software installed for %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your REN file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: When another REN application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Obsolete Version of Unknown Software

In other instances, your Renamed File file version may not be supported by your version of Unknown Software. If you've got the wrong version of Unknown Software installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Your Renamed File file was probably created by a newer release of Unknown Software than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: Right-clicking on your REN, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Regardless, most of the REN file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Unknown Software installed.

Other REN File Issues

Assuming you have the right Unknown Software version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening REN files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening RENs. Problems unrelated to software:

• REN file type Registry entries are wrong
• The REN file description within the Windows Registry was removed
• Partial installation of Unknown Software that did not fully complete
• File corruption affecting your REN file
• Malware-tainted REN file can't be opened
• Hardware related to RENs has device driver corruption
• Windows has inadequate resources to open your Renamed File file
