Troubleshooting Problems Opening FFIL Files
Common FFIL Opening Problems
Font Book Isn't There
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open FFIL Files" when trying to open your FFIL. If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Font Book for %%os%% installed on your computer. The typical path of opening your FFIL with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens FFIL files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Font Book Requires Update
In other instances, your Mac Font Suitcase file version may not be supported by your version of Font Book. If you've got the wrong version of Font Book installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Your Mac Font Suitcase file was probably created by a newer release of Font Book than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the FFIL file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening FFIL files are due to having the incorrect version of Font Book installed on your computer.
Associated Difficulties Loading FFIL Files
Even with the correct version of Font Book installed, you can still experience difficulties opening FFILs. Other FFIL opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- FFIL file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- The FFIL file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Partial installation of Font Book that did not fully complete
- The FFIL itself is corrupted
- FFIL file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Hardware related to FFILs has device driver corruption
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Mac Font Suitcase format
