Understanding BMZ Issues
Common BMZ Opening Problems
Portal 2 is Not Installed
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open BMZ Files" when trying to open your BMZ. If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Portal 2 for %%os%% installed on your computer. The OS won't know what to do with your BMZ file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your BMZ file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Wrong Version of Portal 2 is Installed
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Portal 2 installed that's incompatible with your Portal Bonus Map Zip File type. If you've got the wrong version of Portal 2 installed, you'll need to install the correct version. The primary cause of this problem is that your Portal Bonus Map Zip File file was created by a different (newer) version of Portal 2 than what's installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of BMZ file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Primarily, problems experienced when opening BMZ files are due to having the incorrect version of Portal 2 installed on your computer.
Additional BMZ Opening Issues
Assuming you have the right Portal 2 version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening BMZ files. If you're still experiencing problems opening BMZ files, there could be other computer problems. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
