OOT Troubleshooting

Typical OOT Opening Challenges

Apache OpenOffice Not Present

Double-clicking your OOT file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open OOT File". When this happens, it is commonly due to Apache OpenOffice missing in %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your OOT file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: If you don't have Apache OpenOffice installed, and you know of another program to open your OOT file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Incorrect Apache OpenOffice Version

In other instances, your Apache OpenOffice Text Document file version may not be supported by your version of Apache OpenOffice. Visit the Apache Software Foundation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Apache OpenOffice. This issue mainly occurs when your Apache OpenOffice Text Document file was created by a newer version of Apache OpenOffice than you have on your PC.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the OOT file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Summary: Not having the right Apache OpenOffice version on your computer can cause problems opening OOT files.

Other OOT File Issues

Assuming you have the right Apache OpenOffice version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening OOT files. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening OOT files. Other contributing causes:

  • Windows Registry OOT file paths that are incorrect
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the OOT file in the Windows registry
  • Apache OpenOffice or another OOT application experienced a flawed installation
  • Your OOT can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Your OOT has adversely impacted by malware
  • Drivers associated with OOT software need to be updated
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Apache OpenOffice Text Document files
