Troubleshooting Problems Opening GS Files
Common GS Opening Problems
Google Apps Script is Not Installed
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open GS Files" when trying to open your GS. When this happens, it is commonly due to Google Apps Script missing in %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your GS file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you don't have Google Apps Script installed, and you know of another program to open your GS file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Google Apps Script is Out-of-Date
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Google Apps Script file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of Google Apps Script installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: If you right-click on your GS file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening GS files are due to having the incorrect version of Google Apps Script installed on your computer.
Additional GS Opening Issues
Errors opening Google Apps Script files can still occur even with the latest Google Apps Script software installed on your computer. If you are continuing to have errors with loading GS files, other external issues might be to blame. Other contributing causes:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for GS
- The GS file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the GS format
- Your GS can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- GS file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Hardware related to GSs has device driver corruption
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Google Apps Script file
