Sources of FOS Problems
Typical FOS Opening Challenges
Fallout 3 Removed
When trying to open your FOS file, you get the error "Can't Open FOS File Type". Customarily, this means that Fallout 3 is not installed on %%os%%. The typical path of opening your FOS with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your FOS file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Incorrect Fallout 3 Version
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Fallout 3 Saved Game file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you do not have the proper version Fallout 3 (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. The primary cause of this problem is that your Fallout 3 Saved Game file was created by a different (newer) version of Fallout 3 than what's installed.
Tip: Right-clicking on your FOS, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Conclusion: The majority of FOS file opening issues are due to not having the correct Fallout 3 version installed.
Other Causes of FOS File Opening Problems
Although you might already have Fallout 3 or another FOS-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Fallout 3 Saved Game files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening FOSs. These issues include:
- FOS file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- The FOS file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Defective install of a FOS program, such as Fallout 3
- FOS file corruption
- FOS file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Drivers associated with FOS software need to be updated
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Fallout 3 Saved Game files
