BSS Troubleshooting
Frequent BSS Opening Issues
Resident Evil Disappeared
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open BSS Files" when trying to open your BSS. If so, it typically means that you don't have Resident Evil installed for %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your BSS with Resident Evil, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: If you don't have Resident Evil installed, and you know of another program to open your BSS file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Resident Evil Requires Update
Your Resident Evil Background Images File file is incompatible with Resident Evil because you might have the wrong version installed. Visit the Capcom website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Resident Evil. Most of the time your Resident Evil Background Images File file was created by a newer Resident Evil than what you have installed.
Tip: Investigate your BSS file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening BSS files are due to having the incorrect version of Resident Evil installed on your computer.
Other BSS File Opening Causes
You can still experience errors opening BSS files even with the latest version of Resident Evil installed on your PC. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening BSS files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Invalid BSS file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry BSS description
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the BSS format
- The BSS itself is corrupted
- Your BSS has adversely impacted by malware
- Hardware related to BSSs has device driver corruption
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Resident Evil Background Images File file successfully
