Troubleshoot RTE Files
Troubles Opening RTE Files
AutoCAD Architecture is Not Installed
You attempt to load your RTE file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The RTE File Extension". If so, it typically means that you don't have AutoCAD Architecture installed for %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your RTE with AutoCAD Architecture, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your RTE file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Outdated AutoCAD Architecture
Sometimes your installed version of AutoCAD Architecture won't support your Revit Project Template file. Visit the Autodesk, Inc. website to download (or purchase) the latest version of AutoCAD Architecture. Most of the time your Revit Project Template file was created by a newer AutoCAD Architecture than what you have installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of RTE file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening RTE files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other Causes of RTE File Opening Problems
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of AutoCAD Architecture will resolve your issue. If you are continuing to have errors with loading RTE files, other external issues might be to blame. Problems unrelated to software:
- Invalid RTE file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Unintentional removal of the description of the RTE file inside the Windows Registry
- AutoCAD Architecture or another RTE application experienced a flawed installation
- Your RTE file is corrupted (issues with your Revit Project Template file itself)
- RTE file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Drivers associated with RTE software need to be updated
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Revit Project Template file successfully
